Maths

Mathematics at RMGS is taught by well qualified, mathematically trained teachers who are sympathetic to the varying demands of their students. In Years 7 and 8, students are taught in form groups whilst Years 9 to 11 are taught in sets, whose sizes allow those students of lesser ability to be taught in smaller groups.

The maths department use interactive whiteboards which are in each classroom and the school computer network has several pieces of specialist mathematics software so that students in Years 7 to 11 will have many opportunities to use these.
The express sets take the tests for Levels 6-8 at Key Stage 3, Mathematics GCSE in the November of Year 11, and GCSE Statistics in the June of Year 11. All other groups take the tests for Levels 5-7 or 6-8, depending on ability at Key Stage 3 and Mathematics GCSE in the June of Year 11; the tier of entry will be higher for all students following the introduction of the new two tier specification.

In Year 12, groups are taught AS Mathematics. This consists of two core maths units and either a mechanics or a statistics unit. For those choosing pure maths, three core maths units will be studied. In Year 13, groups are taught A2 Mathematics, which consists of two more core maths units and a mechanics or statistics or decision maths unit or for those choosing pure maths, three more pure maths units.

For the more able mathematicians Further Mathematics is available, as is teaching for STEP for those wishing to read Mathematics at Cambridge or the Advanced Extension Award. Additional information about teaching arrangements can be found elsewhere on this site.
