ICT has become a part of our everyday lives and we expect our students to access information and equipment in all subjects. It is important to recognise that ICT should enhance learning rather than guide the learning that takes place. We have invested in a wide range of equipment around the school to enable students to use modern technology in all of their subject areas.
There are approximately 330 networked curriculum workstations, more than 60 student laptops running on our wireless network, and a number of specialist computers for audio and video editing. There are 6 full ICT suites, a dedicated 6th Form ICT Suite, as well as other areas with computers within regular classrooms. Over the summer of 2007 we upgraded more than 100 computers, meaning that all of our computers are no more than 4 years old. We run Windows XP on all of our workstations, we also have a wide variety of software which is used by all subject areas. All of our computers run Microsoft Office 2003. Every classroom in the school has an digital projector, and nearly all of the rooms in the school have an interactive whiteboard and fitted sound system. All teachers have their own laptops which can be used over the wireless network in any classroom. We have a proxy server that enables all of the machines attached to our network to connect to the Internet simultaneously. The proxy server also supplies us with a firewall which blocks unauthorised access from the outside world, as well as controlling internal access to Internet resources. Our internet connection is a 10Mbps fibre connection which is supplied and maintained by the Medway LEA, who control the Internet filtering which prevents inappropriate material from being viewed or downloaded by the students. Having these services controlled by a large organisation means that our network is even more secure than before. Every Pupil at RMGS has their own e-mail address and this can be used on any of our networked workstations, as well as accessed from home or any internet ready PC. We have been sucessfully using Moodle for more than 3 years now, Moodle is a Virtual Learning Environment. You can learn more about it here. View More About |
