Year 8

Ethos and Expectations

The main aim of the school is to secure high academic achievement for young people and to help them mature into confident, well-motivated individuals who can make the most of their opportunities and enrich the wider community. We endeavour to provide a friendly and caring atmosphere for learning.

Bullying

We define bullying as action or attitude designed to undermine the self-esteem of others.

The school will not tolerate bullying by any member of the school community. We believe that:

  • no one should have to suffer sexist or racist abuse
  • no one should have to suffer persistent name calling
  • no one should have to fear or suffer physical violence
  • no one should feel victimised in any way
  • it is every pupil’s responsibility to ensure that harassment is not tolerated

The rule is if there is a problem share it.

Bullying varies considerably and it is important that we distinguish between minor upsets in friendships, bossiness, and real bullying. Most pupils fall-out or break up with their friends sometimes and there may be arguments and even name calling on both sides. This is usually forgotten in a few days and need not be dealt with as formal bullying. However, if the name-calling persists, extends, involves other pupils and escalates into other hurtful behaviour then we need to know.

Rewards and Punishments

Rewards

The school aims to promote high standards of behaviour, self-discipline and learning through positive encouragement and reward. When you do something well your teacher will recognise this by speaking to you in class, writing comments on your work, giving high marks and perhaps giving a commendation.

Commendations earned in this way will be recorded on your report and will contribute to the award of Certificates of Merit.

Punishment

If you fail to meet the required high standard of behaviour then you should expect to receive a penalty. If the misbehaviour is serious or if you have received a number of penalties you will receive a detention that will take place at lunch-time. If you continue to misbehave your parents will be informed. In some circumstances an after-school detention may be considered more appropriate. (Please note that you may be kept after school for up to 10 minutes without notice).

In serious cases of misbehaviour you may be excluded from school for a period of time. As a last resort, pupils may be permanently excluded from school.
